The following is my experience. I'm not an expert.
I know that 16.09 needs significant updates to compile on a recent version of Linux. I started to see what it would take, but put it aside. I still have an old box with Mint 17.2 that it builds fine on. To get these old builds running on a new box, you need to copy a few system libs over and use LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
I understand that 'Next' is a lot closer to building on recent Linux and I would recommend building the most recent next which I think is r796. I have not really tried this recently. It may work with little or no changes.
