Hello,
need help setting up the cc3d and ublox 7m.
Can the gps be plugged into the cc3d and tested for basic op without a battery connected, just the USB in the fc?

Because CC3D is lacking room, it does not automatically set up the GPS.  It also does not use GPS at all for flight modes or for navigation.  E.g. there is no RTB/RTH for CC3D.  You only get GPS trail on GCS map.

To use GPS on CC3D you will need to follow these instructions (attached).  You will need:
- to use UBX setup program called u-center.exe.
- a PC running Windows (u-center.exe (older version at least) does run correctly in Wine on Linux, I don't know about Mac, probably something similar)
- a USB to serial converter (you can use CC3D for this though...)
- a USB converter to GPS cable that you must solder up yourself if you use USB converter
- a GPS with a CC3D connector.  Generally requires soldering.

CC3D connectors are JST-SH 1.0mm

GPS can't be powered with USB, need external power source connected to servo Outputs (step down or Esc) that provides +5v to GPS trough the Flexi or MainPort .

CC3D has some limitations like Cliff say.
GPS should allow configuration storage. (small and cheap GPS can't store config)

CC3D can't do RTH, just limited GPS support , only for OSD data purposes.

Chinese people named his Revolution "Revolution" :P

Search for "Revolution", there is tiny version that need extra Oplink if you want telemetry link or the normal Revolution.

Be warned, some Revo versions with output connectors colored (yellow/red) do not follow exactly initial design.

IIRC

Banggood and Goodluckbuy both sell Mini Revos.  One is a complete Revo, but smaller and costs about USD $70 and the other is a complete Revo, but without telemetry and costs about USD $45 (you can get telemetry add on for it for about $25 and that includes ground and air modules).

As Laurent said, the Chinese use the term "CC3D" in everything, just to get people to look.  You need the word "Revolution" or "Revo".

Beware that these may have a different power regulator component than it is supposed to.  And that component needed different capacitors, which they didn't do.  You may need to remove a tiny soldered on component to get the barometric altitude sensor to work well enough.  There are posts here about it.
