I'm finding it really slow to move around on the map in GCS and zooming in and out takes ages.

I'm using windows 10 and default settings for map in GCS.

Any suggestions?

You can rip the zone you want and allow map use without Internet connection with cache.

Push Ctrl key and select area with mouse on map.
Right click and choose Rip map

Start with a small area and check if result is better.

I've just been playing with map ripping and it does speed things up.

However it just takes sooooo long to then navigate to another part of the map.

You must rip all the areas that you want to ever see. 

I start out with world at lowest level, then country, state, county at whatever levels don't take too long to rip, then more and more local and include higher to highest detail only right at the two places I fly plus my home.

Then you might go into Tools -> Options -> OpMap
and play with setting Access Mode to "Cache Only"
