There are some 1000KV motors that pull more than 30A and some that pull less than 30A.  Look at the motor spec for max current.  It is best to use ESCs that handle some more current than the motor uses at max current.  20A to 25A motors work well with 30A ESCs.

You can run them mismatched.  Prop down so your 40A motor only pulls 20-25A for instance.

Current in motors depends on props you put on it, you can put a 5*3 prop in a big 1000Kv motor and never reach more than 10A.
The load (from propeller) made the current, not the motor alone.

You may need to look the current given according to the propeller you use in motor specs, not the max motor current listed to be the max admissible current by the motor before it burns.

So to estimate the current needed, what motor do you use and what propeller ?

Hello thanks for all the info, however what i really want to know is:

example: (i dont know the specs i just made up this motor for the example)

i have a sample motor 2306 1500 KV that when using a 8x4 prop draws ~20 AMP current

so my choice would be to use a 30 amp esc

so here is my choice:

A big and bulky 30 amp esc

but look at this:

A very tiny 30 amp esc

i see that most larger quads use large ESC's but what if there is a tiny esc with the same amp rating? can i use it on larger quads?
as long as it exceeds the setup current requirement?

Go by the specs.  BEC part needs a heat sink, sometimes more than the ESC part.  Some power components are less efficient and need a bigger heat sink.
