Revolution Performance Opinions
« on: January 05, 2017, 06:39:37 pm »
Hey guys,

So I am building a 700 size FBL heli, and I am wondering how the revolution works as a controller for them. I have 2 extra laying around some guys are telling me to purchase a specific FBL controller. So I figured I would hop on here and ask you all how these work. Is the revolution on par with with say and Ikon FBL controller? If not Why?

The only comparison that I can make is versus Beastx. I like CC3Ds better. I have them not tried on anything but my 250s.
Happy Landings!

As long as you don't use baro altitude hold or GPS, you shouldn't be able to tell the difference in flight.  I prefer the Revo, but I use the extra features, and it is about 5x more expensive.  CC3D's are about $8 shipped on eBay.

There aren't a lot of heli guys here, and the devs are the same.  Before I did it on a 700, I would install it on a mothballed old faithful 450, etc. and get it all working there first.

I've got a couple nice 30 CP nitro helis I am thinking about putting an LP FC into, but I will do it to a cheap old CP electric first.

First heli...  Being an LP dev I am really pulled in two directions here.

For your first heli and a big one, I would push you toward whatever local experts you have.  I would say that LP would be OK if a local expert is willing to take a lot of time (like he is retired) with you to help you guarantee success.  Local exprts know how to make one fly and they know how to adjust the stuff they are familiar with.  Do these guys you mentioned fly big FBL helis?

In any case, I would leave the main motor (electric?) disconnected, until everything was acting right.  You could plug a servo in, in the place of the motor, just so you could see what the motor speed was.  Or bolt a small brushless motor (no prop) on somewhere so you can hear a motor sound.  Have it set up so that you know you can stop the motor easily (no idle up at first, etc.)  First time running the main motor and rotor I would use a very low voltage pack (or run it way rich for nitro) such that full power isn't enough to lift off.

The heli stuff in LP is a bit of a work in progress from what I still understand and I think I would recommend against it in your case because:
- you are a heli beginner
- LP is work in progress
- big can cause a lot of damage
- big is expensive

Good advice Cliff! Add lots of sim time, too.
Happy Landings!
