Cheap, Good 3 Axis Gimbal for Xiaomi Yi 4k?
« on: April 14, 2017, 05:48:08 pm »
I am looking to try and do some aerial photography. The main gimbals that I have seen are the Tarot 3DIII, Tarot T4-3D, and Feiyu Tech FY MiNi3D Pro (more expensive though). Of the videos I have seen the T4-3D has the best stabilization but I don't think it fits the Yi. The 3DIII is said to be modifiable to make it fit. Any experience/thoughts/preference/other gimbals?

Thanks,
Tim

Just an opinion for an answer, and from someone who has never had a 3D gimbal.

I think a 3D gimbal is extra cost, weight, fragility, and complexity over a 2D (no yaw) gimbal.  I am guessing that a professional crew often uses 2 people with a 3D gimbal, one to fly and one to frame the picture with the gimbal and record.

There are flight modes in LP and other brands that make yaw gimballing less required than is first assumed.

I have a 2D gimbal and have decided that the quality isn't what I would like -  I think that a 3D gimbal is sort of necessary if you want to use the video in films or anything which I would like to :)

I may have some of this wrong since I haven't actually flown CourseLock, but think about these...

It may be that CourseLock would help make your 2D gimbal act like 3D.  Point the quad in the direction you want to fly for your fly-by, switch into CL, hold forward aircraft pitch stick to maintain speed in the locked direction while you use aircraft yaw and gimbal pitch to point the camera exactly where you want it while you do a fly-by.  Adding some aircraft roll to the forward aircraft pitch will point the course a little left or right if desired.  Mixing a transmitter knob into the pitch channel can even give you a constant forward rate for this.

VelocityRoam can be used to circle a point of interest with the nose always pointed inward.  To circle clockwise around a point, hold left roll for leftward motion and hold the correct (small) amount of right yaw depending on the size of circle you want and your leftward speed.  Use gimbal pitch to frame the picture vertically, and vary the yaw slightly to frame the picture horizontally.    Mixing a transmitter knob into the roll channel can even give you a constant forward rate for this.

It's more just the inevitable small yaw wobbles that appear in the footage which I am trying to eliminate, the drone itself can only do so much to prevent that. They tend to distract from the nice views :(
