OP platinum GPS v9- Any alternative?
« on: April 26, 2016, 11:04:05 pm »
Hello,
The topic title says almost everything.

Do you have any alternative to OP platinum GPS, for revolution.

All models I found only have i2c magnometer when they have one.

Is it better to use external i2c magnometer or internal revolution compass?

Which model do you use if you have one on your revolution setup?

Any advice welcome :)

The internal mag is hard to get the board positioned so magnetic fields from power wires don't interfere with it and external I2C mags are sometimes difficult to get working well.

The alternative I've been suggesting is the DJI Naza GPS and it's clones.   They're the closest thing to a v9 currently being made.  The next branch of the code and the next release support it.  It sends the gps and mag data on one cable and only uses one port on the FC.

Could anyone link any of these clones?

Thanks Hank!  Is the first link a 4 wire connector?

Yes, the connector that comes on them all is essentially the 4 pin version of our normal 3 pin servo connectors.  You'd need to splice on our standard connector.

Thanks for the advice !

Any idea about this one ? http://www.lxrcmodel.com/details.asp?prodid=4837&classId=
(not much info about the buit-in compass..)

Do you have an ETA of the next release ?

No, that one appears to be one of the ones that may or may not have an I2C mag chip inside but either way don't have the wires attached to use it.   Any of the ones I'm talking about will prominently mention the DJI Naza gps and have the servo connector like 4 pin connector.

I don't speak for the project but the short answer is no I don't.  No one has an actual date.  Some projects pick a date and release then no matter what the software is like.  LibrePilot does it differently, it has a list of features, changes, and fixes that are planned for the next release.  Whenever they're all done and tested it will release.

I know that. It was already like that when I was with openpilot. And this is a good method.
I was just wondering about an answer like : "soon"  or "in some time".
I understand that it's more the second choice :).

I don't think anyone here is a lawyer so you're unlikely to get an actual answer to that question. And AFIK no one here owns the GPSV9 design so no one can give you permission anyway.

Personally, I wouldn't copy the V9 design itself.    The feature everyone needs is a GPS/Mag combo that only uses one connector.  The NAZA one fills that need and so would a GPS that has a M8 type gps module but is firmware compatible with the V9.  Maybe a higher gain antenna patch and a better LNA and SAW filter.

Or one with a helical antenna.  f5soh is doing some experiments with a homebuilt antenna a little bigger than the FPV ones that show that they work better than the patch ones.  A company named Sarantel made a really nice small one but they went out of business and all the other ones seem to be more expensive.  I'd have thought some Chinese company would be producing something similar but haven't found one.

In short, I'd suggest making something different and hopefully improved from the V9 but firmware compatible with it.

ok, I will try to design a smaller one, use M8N,fw compatible.
If you like, then I open source,is it illegal?
