Title: Trying to get updated downloads
Post by: JohnC on January 12, 2018, 11:55:55 pm
Hello out there.

I am stuck once again.  I am trying to download 16,09 and keep ending up with a blank page with two squiggles in the middle of it.

What am I missing here?

thanks,
John

Downloads are here (https://librepilot.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LPDOC/pages/4128780/Downloads)

Which file are you trying to download ?

Hi f5soh

When I click on the "here" I get a blank page with two squiggles on it.

I have a quad with Emax Bullet escs that are Dshot.  When I go to the GSC it shows Dshot 125 but it will not highlight when I click on it.
I read on the updates that version 16.09 might work with other Dshots.  I have been trying to download the newer boot loader and version 16.09.

It is quite possible I do not know what I am doing here.  I have been successful in the past in setting up CC3D but now so much has changed I am somewhat lost as I have fallen behind.

The "here" link is simply the link to the Wiki page, i wonder why you cannot display the Download page in Wiki...

DShot is only supported using the Next branch: You can try latest build (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1GhNh8lSvQeC6rEdg9-RHUq3FMaWj2TTe) at your own risk.

When I go to the download I get a message "No available application can open it".
What does this refer to?

What system are you using ?
Windows, Linux, OSX ?

I am using a Mac OSX.

The installer file (.dmg) for OSX can be downloaded here (https://librepilot.atlassian.net/wiki/download/attachments/4128780/LibrePilot-16.09-osx.dmg) (16.09), for next maybe later someone can compile one.
About the message "No available application can open it", i have no idea... dmg is a standard file format for OSX.

Hi f5soh

Some success!  I have the 16.09 firmware installed.  It is on the last page so I know it is there.
I went through some of the setup and when it comes to the type of ESC there is a Dshot 125 but when I click on it it will not highlight.

I guess I have to figure out how to change mine to the 125.  I will start on that tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.
John

One other thing I should ask......

As I said above the GSC has a highlight spot for Dshot 125 ESC's.  Is that functional if you have the Dshot 125's?  I read somewhere that LibrePilot does not support Dshot.

I am trying to figure out if I am trying to do something that is impossible.

hi John,

Are you sure you see DShot 125? I think it is OneShot125 you see there.

In addition to PWM and PWMSync, there are:
- OneShot (125, 42)
- MultiShot
- DShot (not supported in 16.09, you need next (*) for it)

These are (very) different protocols, and not just "variation" of "Shot" mode, despite the name.

(*) next is not something that you need to wait "next year" or anything like that, it is just generic version name for current development version.

Hi Mr_w

This helps a lot.  Your input is very helpful.
I thought I was very close to getting this quad in the air but I guess I am not.   It seems the changes and "improvements" in the electronics for quads is going much faster than my brain can handle at age 72.

I will have to figure out if my Emax Bullet ESC;s can be reprogrammed for the CC3d or not.  Or just buy different ESC's.

As far as I know you don't need to have specific ESCs. Most ESCs with BLHeli automatically detect protocol the FC is talking to them.
Just pick OneShot125 and you good to fly. Don't forget to calibrate them. And even Dshot ESC should work with OneShot125.

You can try Next package : LibrePilot-16.09+r550-g213893e-osx.dmg (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1kpy6VLSGr_TpB23MjZTkk0nVnH9qvQce), this one support DShot.

Hi f5soh  and others

I tried a couple of times to download the Next Package but it would not do it completely.

This is very embarrassing but I had all 4 motors plugged in backwards-the signal wires in the wrong side.

There is still something not right with the motors.  I can get connected, then arm it but when I move the throttle the motors "splutter" for lack of a better word.  The quad moves around on the floor with some spin one direction then the other. The throttle has to be about 1/2 up and there is no change in the speed.

Anyone come across this before?

Motor sputtering is usually caused by one of the three motor wires being burned inside the motor.  It can also be caused by one of the three motor wires being burned inside the ESC (electronic components).  Infrequently it is caused by incompatibility between ESC and motor brands/types.

Disconnect motor from ESC.  Test for continuity from one of 3 wires to another of the wires.  Test each pair of wires this way (A-B, A-C, B-C).  They should all act like a straight wire with such little resistance that you can't accurately measure it on a normal Ohm meter.  If using a normal Ohm meter it should show between 0 and 1 Ohm.

Further tests:
Take props off.
Plug in USB to computer and also plug in flight battery.
Go to Output page.
Enable "Test Motors"
Run motor outputs sliders up one at a time.

Do all motors sputter? ... That sounds like ESC/motor incompatibility.  Too much coincidence that all are burned?  If it is an incompatibility, and you are using stock ESC firmware, and the ESC has "timing" adjustment in the "beep menu", you might get it to run by adjusting that.

A note:  I had similar issues with cheap SimonK ESCs from eBay.  It turns out that they had really old firmware on them.  I flashed new firmware on the ESCs and they worked fine.

Another note:  The problem I had with the old SImonK firmware was really just a startup issue.  The motors that were lower when sitting on the ground were the ones that would sputter because when starting, those motors would be commanded to run faster to level the quad.  I found that tipping the quad to slightly raise motors that wouldn't start would allow them all to start when I held it very level when starting the motors.  There was no problem during flight.

Hi Cliff

I think the motors are ok.  This is based on doing the calibration.  When I do 4 at once and slide the bar they all move and sound right.  As I write this I think I should try one at a time and see if there are any differences.

If motors start up with sliders but not in Attitude mode, then it sounds like you have a startup problem.  In Attitude mode you must manually level the quad, just to get the motors started, by slightly raising the motor(s) that don't start (tilt the quad to raise those motors).

Another way to simply test this is to try to start the motors in Rate mode.  In that case leveling is not an issue and they might start up more easily.

Make sure your ESC/motor "neutral" settings are very low ... just 5 or so from being "off".

Always try to start the motors slowly with minimal throttle stick that will start the motors.

Cliff, that was a neat test.
First time I heard it.
Can the motors be tested the same way?
Should also ask if you say a motor 'Sputter' and a motor 'Stutter' is basically the same symptom? I have often run in to stuttering motors.

Sorry I wasn't clear...  You test motors that way; not ESCs.

In my experience, it is usually the motors that get burned, not the ESCs, but it would be easy to burn an ESC by touching the 3 motor wires together, especially intermittently while running.

If you are testing motors this way, then why disconnect them from the ESC?

In at least some cases, ESCs are not switched off when the power is removed.  For instance, some ESCs short the windings together (drag brake) for a long time after the battery is removed.  It takes a while for the charge on the capacitance on the FET inputs to bleed away.

You can feel that the prop still has a drag on it even after the battery is removed.  Disconnect the ESC and the drag goes away.
