Title: Power for FPV camera
Post by: zukenj on April 25, 2017, 08:36:15 pm
Hello,

By this graphic I need one of the ESC with BEC giving power to the FC, and the rest just signal. My question is, for the others do I need the Black wire or just the white  signal wire?

What I am looking for is to use the Power and ground from the UBEC to power the camera, which is a 5 V camera.

 ??? pic above doesnt have power lines from esc (but one !) and dont do that, power your FC clean always !!(onles your know what your doing like having a cap and know the power draw etc but then again we normaly do not do that)

white = pwm
black = ground
red = power / volt

do you have a opto esc?

and you can connect any camera as long as it get power its needs where ever you get the power from, basic rules apply , does the source give the power it needes, as simpel as that (but dont get it from the fc line !)

get your self somthing like this ( there are simpel one en more advange one , but always make sure you fc gets clean power, dont add things on the same power line as your fc , NEVER !)

You can easly stack it like i did. (keep in mind that the pdb sould be able to deliver the power needed for the motor's IF NOT(gues that your setting up a 450) you can simply leave your esc to your frame and connect pdb to power line of frame and the rest you can connect to your pdb  cam,tx,5v,12v etc)

Thanks. Look like I did not explains my self.  The four ESCs have Ubec on them and the can deliver 5 volt each. In the graphic they have one given power to the FC. Can I use another one to power the camera. If that is right will I just need the white cable to the FC or do I niid the white and black?

Its recommended to have the ground connected but you can have only puls cable connected . so you can do that

For most ESCs, "just plug them in".  That allows all 4 ESCs (the BECs in side them) to provide 5v power.  What usually happens is that manufacturing tolerances will have one ESC producing 5.1 volts while the others produce 4.9, 5.0, 5.0.  The 5.1v ESC will raise the voltage to 5.1v and the others will effectively turn off, seeing that the voltage is already high enough.  This means that one ESC will get hotter than the others from just running the electronics with the motors not even running.

Often, the main heat source for the ESC is the BEC load (FC, receiver, GPS, servos, etc) and they don't get warm from running the motors.

For people that say to cut the red wire on all but one ESC servo connector, you should know that each ESC has 2 or 3 separate BEC chips inside, so you are already running them in parallel by the design of the ESC.

Opto ESCs generally don't have BECs and you will have to buy a separate BEC or use the one on some PDBs.

Some larger ESCs have a "switching BEC".  It's generally accepted that it is NOT good to run these BECs in parallel, so slide the pin for the red wire out of the servo connector and tape it back to keep it covered and out of the way.

TheOtherCkliff,

That is exactly my Configuration, all the ESC servo connector are attached to the FC. I read multiple times that is no good because what you mentioned on the different voltage range, and that will generate fluctuations. I measure the ESC BECs output and all are 5.0 V. That is what my Fluke tester show, but it could be that is not sensitive enough. My plan so far is to get one of the ESC servo red cable an black cable to power and ground the FPV camera and keep the signal cable to the FC.

sugestions and thoughts are welcome.  :)

Thanks.

Please, can someone move this thread to Applications - FPV

Thanks

I find out that just the signal cable from ESC to FC is not good. You need both the Signal and the Ground.
